these are individual pixels from a larger image that have been blown up really big using a “nearest neighbor” technique to preserve the pixel edges. these particular dots are from a small area of one frame of this gif:
so half the trick is generating an image with interesting colors, and the other half is zooming in and finding the coolest parts. i got these particular colors using the HTML5 image filter (Chrome version / Safari version) but you could use any number of techniques.
gifs can produce some pretty interesting results due to their use of dithering and color tables, but i’ve also gotten good results from glitched images and transcoded data files.
